Reader’s Question:

If I will be late for my auto insurance payment here in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will the auto insurance company give me a grace period of some sort?

Nicholas

Albuquerque, NM

A lot of insured motorists are under the wrong impression that there would be a grace period for the payment of auto insurance premiums. A lot of health and life insurance policies allow a 30-day grace period and the laws of the state sometimes require those grace periods but auto insurance in general does not work this way. If you are late on your payment for your car insurance policy in Albuquerque, New Mexico, you are at the mercy of your car insurance provider. But state insurance laws would give a number of days’ notice that you are eligible for before your policy gets cancelled.

That would be a bit of consolation when you are already on the verge of losing your car insurance. If you have gotten away with having late payments for a few days in the past, do not hope that your insurance provider would always understand that. In a lot of cases, an individual who has been dropped by the insurance company would complain to the state insurance department and argue that the insurance company always accept late payment before. Even though state insurance regulators can resolve a lot of complaints, they could not be able to help a person who has a habit of failing to pay insurance premiums.
