Reader’s Question:

I know that DUI penalties in New Mexico are strict. Unfortunately, my friend has been caught drunk driving recently. I just wanna know what penalties are involved? And what can we do to still get lower DUI insurance for him?

You were not able to mention if it’s the first time that your friend was caught for DUI offense here in New Mexico. Assuming that your friend is a first time offender, DUI penalties would be:

  • A fine of $500;
  • Jail time of up to 90 days;
  • Your friend would be required to attend DUI school and get into a rehabilitation program for alcohol or drug users;
  • Ignition interlock device must be put in his car, he would shoulder that personally;
  • Should pay for his ignition interlock drivers license;
  • Community service of 24 hours;
  • License suspension for 6 months to 1 year.

A DUI offense is a very serious matter that’s why DUI penalties are harsh. And getting a DUI insurance that is within your budget could be a challenge but there are still ways like:

  • Make sure to shop around for DUI insurance and carefully compare the DUI insurance quotes that you got;
  • When shopping for your insurance needs, be honest about your DUI conviction because your insurer would surely find about it;
  • Get additional safety devices for your car to make it safer;
  • If you don’t have a safe parking area for your car, it’s time to get one now, this could possibly lower your DUI insurance rates too.

For other legal questions you have, you may wish to contact a DUI lawyer to better help you with your inquiries. And again, please do not drink and drive. Always be a safe driver.
