Reader’s Question:

I don’t have a car but I usually drive around using my aunt’s car here in New Mexico. I was advised to get a non-owner’s auto insurance, what is the importance of having this?

You may not have your own vehicle in New Mexico but if you drive around using someone else’s vehicle, you may need your own auto insurance for coverage in case of an accident. Since you do not have your own vehicle and you often drive, you will need “non-owners” car insurance policy. There are certain instances wherein a “non-owners” car insurance policy will come in handy:

–Your friends and family may think twice on letting you use their vehicles, particularly if their coverage is not that much. Their coverage may not provide coverage for other drivers, or maybe their liability insurance is small. If you normally use a vehicle that belongs to someone else, a “non-owners” policy may improve the situation.

–Inhabitants of large cities normally do not have their own vehicles, but a lot of them go for vacation and other kinds of trips. If you rent a vehicle, you could buy insurance being provided by the rental company. If you often rent vehicles, a “non-owners” may be more cost efficient than depending on the coverage offered by rental companies.

However, keep in mind that “non-owners” car insurance would set off if the car owner’s liability coverage is used to its maximum value.
